2026 International Scarf Exchange
The Hand Weavers and Spinners Guild of NSW Inc., Australia, invite you to participate in the 34th International Scarf Exchange - 2026.
Inspired by the colours of the Australian native landscape, we create art with our yarn, which is bursting with colour to inspire the senses.
The International Scarf Exchange campaign aims to preserve the skills of hand spinning, dyeing, knitting, weaving, felting, and related textile crafts while encouraging international community collaboration.
How it works
-
Each crafter will send us 150-200 grams of clean, carded, or combed fibre in a resealable plastic bag, along with their entry form, and pay the appropriate entry fee. Your fibre can be of any type or colour. If you send white or natural fibre, your partner may dye it UNLESS you specify that you want it left in its natural state.
-
We will receive your fibre and exchange it for the fibre of another entrant.
-
We will then post the exchanged fibre and a prepaid Australia Post Satchel to you if you are in Australia. If you are an international participant, we cannot provide a prepaid postage satchel; you will need to arrange your postage.
-
You will receive the fibre and craft it into an item. If you’re not a spinner, someone else can spin for you, but please acknowledge them. Don’t need to use all the fibre? Use what is required to complete your item. Please return any unused fibre with the crafted item.
-
When you have completed your crafted item, you will post it back to us in the prepaid Australia Post satchel if you are in Australia. If international, please arrange the postage to ensure it arrives at the Guild by the dates required.
-
All completed items will be displayed in the “International Scarf Exchange Exhibition” to be held at Brush Farm House,19 Lawson St, Eastwood NSW 2022, Australia, in June 2026.
-
The completed item is made from your original fibre, and any leftover fibre will be returned to you after the exhibition.
Australian Biosecurity
All fibre must meet Australian Biosecurity requirements.
Due to strict Australian Biosecurity laws aimed at keeping our island continent safe, we have decided that all fibre must be commercially cleaned and prepared, i.e., silver, top or braids, as most hand-cleaned fibre would not meet these requirements.
